In StampData, a stamp is broadly defined as any kind of adhesive label intended to denote payment of a fee. Stamps include postage stamps, revenue stamps, cinderellas, forgeries, and more.

Stamps have a number of fields or properties that describe them.

  • Issuer - the issuer is the organization or individual producing and selling the stamp.

  • Function - the purpose or usage of the stamp, such as for airmail or parcel post.

  • Date - the date is the date of issue. It can be a specific day, or only known to within a month or year.

  • Issue - the official purpose or definition of the stamp or group of stamps.

  • Value - the value is the monetary value or denomination of the print. While normally consisting of a single number and unit of currency, it may be a sum of two values, such as for a semi-postal.

  • Currency

  • Color - a verbal description of one or more colors of the stamp, or multi if the stamp is in full color.

  • Design type, design, variant - a verbal description of the appearance of the stamp. The design type is a generic term for multiple designs (such as waterbirds), while the design is the design proper, and the variant describes minor variations.

  • Watermark - a design manufactured into the stamp paper.

  • Perforation - the means by which the stamps are made to be separated from a sheet of stamps.

  • Overprint - additional text or design printed on top of the stamp.

  • Overprint color - the color of the overprint.

  • Original issuer - the issuer of the stamp that was overprinted.

  • On - the type of stamp that was overprinted.

  • Inscription - a text element in the design of the stamp. Inscriptions are commonly the name of the issuer, but may also be the function, a mention of the topic being commemorated, etc.

  • Imprint - a text element mentioning the designer or printer of the stamp.

  • Paper - the type of paper (or other material) of which the stamp is made.

  • Paper color - the color of the paper.

  • Print - text describing a particular distinctive printing of the stamp type.

  • Plate - a plate number that is part of the design.

  • Emboss - a design impressed into the stamp paper.

  • Unissued - true of stamps that have not been officially issued.

  • Catalog value - information about the price paid by collectors.
