Orangeburg coil |
The "Orangeburg coil" is a 3-cent design on single-line watermarked paper, perforated with gauge 12 vertically. It was produced for only a short time before the switch to 8.5 perforations, and all of those went to the Bell Pharmaceutical Company of Orangeburg NY, who used them on samples.
<p>
As philatelists were not aware of these stamps at the time, nearly all were discarded, and very few survive. |

Scott mistaken |
The 2008 Scott catalog claims there were no cycling events in the 1904 Olympics, but Wikipedia includes a biography of Marcus Hurley that mentions him winning four golds and a bronze in 1904's cycling events.
http://www.sports-reference.com/olympics/summer/1904/CYC/ does mention some confusion over whether cycling should be included in the 1904 Olympics, due to (incorrect) suspicions that amateurs and professionals were competing together. |

Vineta provisional |
The "Vineta provisional" came about when the crew of the cruiser Vineta wanted to send US newspapers home, but there were no 3-pfennig stamps available to pay the printed matter rate. So the ship's purser bisected 300 5pf and overprinted each half with "3PF".

Tilemsoun? |
The "portillo de Tilimenzo" seems to find no mention on the net outside of this stamp, but there is a village Tilemsoun situated in a gap in a range of hills, in the former Cape Juby territory. I could not find any photos of Tilemsoun, but the Google satellite view seems to match the appearance of the stamp.
